EXCLUSIVE: Timeflies Talks 'Semi-Charmed' & All Their '90s Favorites

Timeflies is throwing it back -- 20 years back -- to 1997, to a little song called "Semi-Charmed Life" by rock band Third Eye Blind. The duo recently released a re-imagined version of the track, simply titled "Semi-Charmed," taking the chorus of the alternative and creating a brand new dance/pop version.

Cal and Rob exclusively tell iHeartRadio of their cover, "'Semi-Charmed' was a formative song from our youth, and we felt like no one had done something like that in a while. Representing like our Timeflies Tuesdays and remixing songs, it's just so much fun to sing that chorus. Everyone knows it. So we just wanted to keep things fun and happy, and [we] just had a great time working with that song."

In honor of Timeflies' "Semi-Charmed" release, we asked the guys to curate a special '90s-themed playlist of their favorite songs from the beloved decade. Making their list of throwbacks are songs like Eminem's "My Name Is," Radiohead's "Creep," Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise," Lou Bega's "Mambo No. 5," Alanis Morisette's "Ironic," and so much more.

Rob says of their choices, "I think it was just a huge time for hip hop and a huge time for rock. So, we're just really going back and forth with those now." He adds, "I just want to throw out [Destiny's Child] 'Say My Name' a few more times, because I just love that song."

Meanwhile Cal explains, "Coming out of the '80s hair band-ness era, then grunge happens, and it's more like pop melodies are happening. And then hip hop's coming up, pop's starting to really happen in a major way, country artists are having pop songs, like Shania Twain. It's just, everything was good."

If you've seen the duo's "Semi-Charmed" lyric video, you'll notice the nod to a time when AOL Instant Messenger -- aka AIM (RIP AIM) -- was THE place to chat with your friends. So, since we're talking all things 90s, we asked Cal and Rob what their favorite trends from the '90s were, and here's what they had to say:

FAVORITE '90s TRENDS

Rob: "Pokémon cards."

Cal: "Plaid."

Rob: "Still more Pokémon cards for me."

Cal: "Pogs."

Rob: "I liked Pokémon Red and Blue"

Cal: "OK, You've made it clear that you like Pokémon."

Rob: "That's pretty much all I did in the '90s."

Cal: "I wore turtlenecks a lot in the '90s. I don't know why."

If you're feeling nostalgic right about now, hang on to that feeling. We also asked the duo what '90s trends should make a comeback. Timeflies explains that the decade has definitely recently made its return with things like plaid and Pokémon (Pokémon Go), but would definitely like to see some classic cartoons rebooted. Rob tells us, "I liked all the cartoons that were going on in the '90s. I feel like they're not back yet, and they should be.

'90s Cartoons That Should Make A Comeback:

Rugrats

Aaahh!!! Real Monsters

Cal: "The guy who like held his eyes? Great show."

Hey Arnold!

Cal: "Move, football head!"

Favorite '90s Slang

Rob: "I feel like 'Yo' really came into true form in the '90s."

Cal: "Was 'LOL' like a ... that was an AIM invention."

"We haven't even talked about AIM, but honestly, that was our life. That was how we talked to people. That's the OG dating app."

Rob: "You gotta respect ROFL, BRB, G2G. I liked GG, good game."

Cal: "I tried to make "TOMO" work for tomorrow. Like 'C U TOMO.' Never caught on."

Rob: "I think 'tmrw' was kind of the smart [word]."
