Dolphin Tale The book and film are inspired by the true story of Winter, a bottlenose dolphin that was rescued in December 2005 off the Florida coast and taken in by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Winter lost her tail after becoming entangled with a rope attached to a crab trap, and was fitted with a prosthetic one.
Dolphin Tale 2 released in 2014 and tells the story of another dolphin at the hospital named "Hope".
Edward Scissorhands Directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as Edward, an unfinished "creation" who has scissor blades instead of hands. Edward is taken in by a suburban family and falls in love with their teenage daughter Kim. The majority of filming took place in Lutz (Carpenters Run) as well as Lakeland. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children began filming in February 2015 in London and right here in the Tampa Bay Area.
Scenes that were shot locally include-
- Driving scenes were shot on the Gandy Bridge.
- Scenes showing the store that Jake works at in the movie was shot at 2333 34th St. South in St. Petersburg. The building is an old closed up grocery store location.
- Scenes showing the home of Jake and his parents were shot in was in Belleair Bluffs.
- Scenes showing Grandpa Abe’s House and his neighborhood was filmed in Sun City Center and Tampa.
Cocoon Directed by Ron Howard about a group of elderly people rejuvenated by aliens.The film was shot in and around St. Petersburg, Florida: locations included the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club, Sunny Shores Rest Home, The Coliseum, and Snell Arcade buildings.
Goodfellas Yes, a majority of the film was filmed in New York and New Jersey, but there is a Tampa scene or two including one at The Columbia in Ybor and a Zoo Scene at Lowry Park Zoo.
Magic Mike The film is loosely based on the experiences of Tatum, who was an 18-year-old stripper in Tampa, Florida. Magic Mike was filmed in several locations around west central Florida.
The Punisher A smuggling operation in Tampa Bay results in the deaths of Bobby Saint, the son of mafia boss Howard Saint, and Otto Krieg, the arms dealer. Krieg is revealed to be undercover FBI agent and Delta Force veteran Frank Castle on his final mission before retirement.
The Parent Trap 2 with none other than Lindsay Lohan! Mitchell Elementary School was the backdrop for the film. Not just the backdrop, but was also the actual name of the school the girls attended. Today you can still see the same building standing and in use for classes for those in South Tampa
