What Is the Meaning Behind the 'Stranger Things' Season 3 Teaser?

On Monday (July 16), Netflix shared the first teaser for Stranger Things Season 3, and it's a bit of a head scratcher.

The clip is a mock commercial for a new mall in Hawkins, Indiana called the Starcourt Mall. The video is oozing with nostalgia, as it showcases all the fab retail stores—the Gap, Claire's, Sam Goody—and amenities this "step into the future" has to offer. Though Eleven and the gang aren't featured in the teaser, one familiar face is: Steve Harrington. Last season's hero apparently now works at the Scoops Ahoy Ice Cream Shop along with a new character, Robin, who's played by Maya Hawke. The clip ends with the message "coming next summer!" which could be a nod to when we can expect the third season to premiere.

Watch the teaser below.

Though it's exciting to see even the smallest glimpse into the new season's premise, people are trying to wrap their heads around what the mall could signify. Many YouTube users seem to think the mall has something to do with the old Hawkins Lab

"Is this mall built over the lab?ï»ż" one user commented. "Is the new lab hidden in this mall and is there something very gloomy about it, where kids and teens are being kidnapped for government tests and again disappearances happen ... and Steve Harrington is working there to get information? or is he so lost in his life? or maybe it's a normal mall and I'm out of my mind????ï»ż" another user wrote in a craze.

We'll just have to wait (until next year, ugh) and see.
