Here's The Proper Pronunciation Of Some Tampa Street Names

Every time my GPS tells me to turn on 'uh-DUH-mo' Drive, I wanna punch it in its stupid GPS face.

Turns out... THAT'S HOW YOU CORRECTLY PRONOUNCE ADAMO DRIVE!

WHAT?? I'm been mispronouncing it my entire life!

A great piece in the Tampa Bay Times did the research on how to properly pronounce some of the most mispronounced street names in Tampa Bay, and Adamo was one of them.

According to the article:

The road that connects Brandon to downtown Tampa is named for Dr. Frank S. Adamo. The proper Italian pronunciation is actually uh-DAH-mo.

And that's not the only one I've been mispronouncing!

You know Bearss Avenue?

If you've been pronouncing it 'bears', like me and almost everyone in Tampa Bay...

YOU'RE WRONG!

According to the Tampa Bay Times:

The Bearss family were pioneers of the citrus industry in Hillsborough County. Even though most people say the word as “bears,” the family pronounces it bierce (rhyming with pierce or fierce).

Here are some more:

  • Brorein is 'bro-REEN' (which thank God I pronounced correctly)
  • Dunedin is 'dun-E-din' (again, correct)
  • Demens Landing is 'deh-MENS' (huh?!?)
  • Lutz is 'loots'
  • Pinellas is either 'pine-ellis' (old fashioned) or 'pin-ellis' (proper in my eyes)
