A South Florida eye doctor was among those getting clemency from outgoing President Trump.
Salomon Melgen was convicted in 2018 in connection to what federal prosecutors called the biggest Medicare fraud in the nation's history. He was accused of falsely diagnosing and treating hundreds of elderly patients for macular degeneration out of his eye clinics that operated from Delray Beach to Port St. Lucie.
Dr. Melgen was a Democrat donor and friend of sitting New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, and faced corruption charges alongside the lawmaker in a trial that ended in a hung jury.
According to a White House statement, Trump's commutation of Melgen's 17 year sentence was supported by Menendez and Republican Miami area Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart.
