We've covered a lot of TikTok challenges since the social media platform first took off, from the hilarious to the downright dangerous. But the latest TikTok trend seems to be damaging Florida's beaches and pissing residents off in the process.

Authorities in Southwest Florida say that they suspect that a viral new TikTok challenge is responsible for deep holes popping up all over area beaches.

Allison Ward of Sanibel told WBBH-TV that she has found four holes, as deep as 5 feet and 4 feet wide on beaches over the past week and that she "almost fell in one."

Sanibel's Mayor, Holly Smith, said "When we're looking at the depth and size of some of these holes that we've found on the beach, this wasn't just really a sandcastle. There was some TikTok challenges saying, 'How deep can you dig?'"

Smith also mentioned that Public Works employees have been working at filling in the disruptive holes that can be dangerous for sea turtles.

Last week, Marco Island Police Department shared a photo on their Facebook showing an abandoned shovel that was left inside a large hole on a nearby beach and urged visitors to leave the beaches the way they found them.

The post read, "Please refill the hole and kindly take your things with you. It's a hazard to other beachgoers, especially our beautiful sea turtles."
