It's National Mosquito Control Awareness Week

Each year, mosquito control divisions and districts throughout the United States use the last week of June as an opportunity to educate the public about the important work they do, the dangers of mosquito-borne illnesses and what to do to prevent the spread of disease.

"Mosquito Week gives our staff additional chances and touch points to interact with the community in a very positive way," says Miami-Dade Mosquito Control Division DirectorDr. Bill Petrie. "We appreciate and look forward to the chance to further carry our 'Fight the Bite' and 'Drain and Cover' messages to the residents of Miami-Dade County."

Headquartered in Doral, the Mosquito Control Division will open and close the week with bookend "Mosquito Fair" events. The first will happen Monday, June 24 at the Joseph Caleb Center(5400 NW 22nd Ave, Miami) and the second will be hosted by theT own of Cutler Bay at its Town Center (10720 Caribbean Boulevard, Cutler Bay) on Friday, June 28. Both events are free and open to the public and will run 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Attendees will be able to learn how to keep mosquitoes from breeding and biting, get an up-close look at live mosquito larvae and preserved adults, as well as mosquito-eating fish in action. There will also be surveillance and equipment demonstrations, and two division trucks parked outside the event sites, including the model outfitted with the Buffalo Turbine, which is used in larviciding missions.
