Another Florida City Pays Hundreds Of Millions In Ransom To Hackers

A North Florida city is the latest to pay a hefty ransom to hackers.

Officials in Lake City have agreed to pay $460,000 after their email and credit card systems were hacked last week.

That comes on the heels of the Riviera Beach City Council voting to pay about $600,000 to hackers. The city says that after insurance pays out most of the cost, $18,000 will be covered by taxpayers, though there are no guarantees that it will work.

Officials with the Palm Beach County Village of Palm Springs recently admitted to paying $1,200 to hackers last year to no avail, before spending $70,000 to an outside firm to get their files back.

The city of Stuart also fell victim to hackers, but city leaders say they didn't have to pay a ransom because they had copies of most of the city's data in a backup system.
