Balloon Popping Caused Panic At Boca Raton's Town Center Mall

We now know what caused a panic at a South Florida mall.

Police in Boca Raton say a loud noise that caused shoppers to run from the Town Center Mall on Sunday and spark nationwide reports of "shots fired," was actually a balloon popping.

According to the findings of an investigation released on Tuesday, surveillance video shows a janitor, pushing a garbage cart in the food court, rolling over and dragging a balloon.

The janitor says he popped the balloon, which was later found on the floor by detectives.

There appears to be a delay of several minutes between the popping of the balloon and when people started running.

Police originally responded to reports of gunshots, but later determined no gun had been fired.

One man was hospitalized after hitting his head on a door.
