Chinese Man Pleads Guilty To Taking Pictures At Key West Naval Base

Chinese National Arrested At Key West Naval Base

A Chinese man has pleaded guilty to taking pictures of a U.S. Navy base in the Keys.

27 year old Lyuyou Liao appeared in federal court in Key West two months after he was arrested using a cellphone to take photos in a restricted area of the Naval Air Station known as the Truman Annex.

He was charged with entering Naval property for the purpose of photographing defense installations.

Liao on Friday pleaded guilty to one count of photographing or sketching defense installations and faces up to one year in prison.

The arrest in December was similar to the cases of three other Chinese nationals caught taking photos at the Key West base in January.

Two men told a security officer they couldn't enter the property without military ID but still drove onto the station to take pictures of structures.

Another Chinese man pleaded guilty last year to illegally taking photos at the same installation and got one year in prison.

The FBI is reportedly investigating whether espionage may be behind these cases.
