Florida Congresswoman Touts Pregnancy Work Rights Bill In The House

A Florida congresswoman talks up a bill being voted on in the House on Thursday.

Lois Frankel of West Palm Beach is co-chair of the Democratic Women's Caucus.

"No woman should be forced to put her pregancy at risk to put food on the table for her family."

She says the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act is a bipartisan bill that would protect pregnant workers by requiring employers to make reasonable accommodations for employees who have limitations stemming from pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions, unless the accommodation would impose an undue hardship on the employer.

Rep. Frankel says it's been more than 40 years since the passage of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, but some things haven't changed.

"Pregnant workers are still facing discrimination...unfairly losing jobs, being denied safe, reasonable accommodations or not being hired in the first place."

According to a press release from the Democratic Women's Caucus.

"Sixty-two percent of pregnant women and new moms are in the workforce, yet pregnant workers have consistently faced discrimination in the form of unpaid leave, being forced out of a job, or in some cases even serious health complications, including miscarriages, from unsafe workplaces."

The bill was filed by Congressman Jerry Nadler, a Democrat from New York.
