High school teacher arrested for online relationship with underage teen

Miami, FL - A teacher at a South Florida High School has bonded out of jail after being arrested and charged for an online relationship with an underage girl.

Miami Beach Senior High School teacher Paul Urquiza, 32, bonded out of the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Wednesday night.

Urquiza, a math teacher at Miami Beach Senior High School, was arrested by Miami-Dade Police around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday after they served a search warrant at his home.

Police say Urquiza and the victim began talking on Instagram, Facebook and email in 2021 after meeting on Reddit.

Investigators say the victim lives overseas and is not a Miami-Dade County student.

The affidavit states communication between the two became inappropriate "within one week, the defendant told the victim he loved her. The victim told the defendant that she was 16 years old and lived with her mother and sisters. The victim watched the defendant graduate from Miami Dade College via a livestream, and he told her he would be teaching math at Miami Beach Senior High School, confirming the victim’s belief that the defendant was over 30 years old.”

Detectives say Urquiza sent the girl graphic videos of sex acts, requested nude photos from her, and told the teen he would book a flight to Miami so they could meet.

The relationship was discovered by the victim's mother in July after the girl accidentally sent a nude picture of herself to her mother.

The teen’s mother confiscated the phone and contacted police.

Urquiza faces charges of sexual performance by a child and possession of images.
