When it comes to hurricanes Tampa Bay has been VERY lucky. The last hurricane to make it's way through our area was 1921 on October 20th. It was the 4th hurricane of the season. The storm in 1921 divided a barrier island, giving us the 2 islands known as "Honeymoon" and "Caladesi"
The "Great Gale of 1848" was the BIGGEST hurricane to ever to make landfall in Tampa Bay. The hurricane took place sometime around September 26th that year, reshaping part of the coast. The "Great Gale" was a category 4 storm. A survivor once called it "The Granddaddy of all hurricanes".
