Broward residents expected to sound off at today's commission meeting against a plan to expand the Monarch Hill Landfill in Pompano Beach. Residents say there's no need to make the landfill, commonly called Mount Trashmore, taller than the Statute of Liberty. Waste Management wants to make the landfill 100 feet higher and 24 acres wider to give it a lifespan of 16 years. Right now, the company says it will only last six more years. Miami-Dade is holding a workshop today on next steps after the plan to build a new trash incinerator in Doral is nixed.
